AEMT Environmental Policy

This Environmental Policy formalises AEMT’s commitment to supporting the principles of environmental sustainability and recognises that a sustainable environment is central to the lives and work of the AEMT and its members.

The aim of the Environmental Policy is to:

  • Implement environmental actions within AEMT
  • Monitor the environmental actions and improvements internally
  • Take an environmental leadership role in our industry by communicating and recommending industry-relevant environmental initiatives externally to our members.

Scope

This Environmental Policy and associated procedures apply to all directors, employees, and contractors working for the AEMT.

Policy

AEMT respects their relationship with the natural environment and its ecosystems. They acknowledge the adverse impacts that human activity can impose and take action to prevent the degradation of those natural systems.

AEMT commits to the following principles and practices:

  • Strive to better understand both the direct and indirect impact that AEMT practices may have on the environment.
  • Minimise AEMT’s impact on the environment.
  • Monitor and manage AEMT’s environmental performance and work towards targets set to reduce adverse impacts, including measuring carbon emissions.
  • Comply with relevant government environmental policy, practices, regulations and legislation, and industry-specific legislation.
  • Reduce the wastage of natural resources in daily operations, including water, paper, and energy.
  • Maximise the recycling of resources, and following the waste hierarchy of “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.”
  • Dispose of waste appropriately, including e-waste at designated e-waste centres.
  • Commit to the principles of preventing pollution to the environment and continual improvement.
  • Minimise pollution by taking steps to limit carbon emissions resulting from vehicle and air travel.
  • Achieving net-zero carbon equivalent emissions in the AEMT by 2030.
  • Align to Sustainable Development Goal 15 To Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
  • Communicate this Environmental Policy to all employees, contractors, and other stakeholders of the AEMT, especially members, as well as making this policy available to the public.
  • Encourage staff, contractors, council, members, partners and suppliers to meet high standards of environmental performance.
  • Foster a sustainably aware culture, where responsibility is assigned and understood.
  • Strive to raise awareness in the community, encourage participation, and train employees in environmental and social matters.
  • Respond to AEMT members’ concerns in relation to the environment, and to recommend and offer a range of initiatives that assist them to achieve their environment-related aspirations and targets.
  • Conduct audits, evaluations, and self-assessments of the implementation of this Environmental policy.
  • Report on the AEMT’s environmental performance in both internal and external communications, where relevant.
  • Review this Environmental policy annually and measuring targets and performance as part of that review.

Responsibility and Review

This Environmental Policy was endorsed by the AEMT Council and Officers.

Implementation of this Environmental Policy is the direct responsibility of the council and senior management of the AEMT, and indirectly, all directors, employees, and contractors working for the AEMT.

This policy was last updated on 07/08/2024 and will be next reviewed in August 2025.

Additional Items:

  • AEMT responded to government targets by:
    • Working with environmental specialists as required.
    • Preparing and promoting AEMT’s environmental policy and action plan.
    • Where appropriate, increasing recycling practices and optimising use of technological equipment.
    • Promoting, encouraging, and rewarding green travel choices.
    • If long distance travel is unavoidable, ensure the correct level of ‘offsetting’ is in place to neutralise carbon emissions.
    • Ensure all AEMT events align to the ISO 20121 standards.

The Management of AEMT Will:

  • Share its expectation of responsibility for the environment to employees, board members and secretariat service providers.
  • Demonstrate a clear commitment to the environment and lead by example, to ensure that the protection of the environment is promoted to all employees.

The Employees of AEMT Will:

  • Be familiar with all the environmental requirements relevant to their own activities and take responsibility for their own impact on the environment.
  • Take part in environmental protection initiatives

AEMT Suppliers Will:

  • Share their own environmental policies with the AEMT.
  • Collaborate with AEMT to reduce both parties’ collective environmental impact, where possible.

Codes of Practice 2025

IMPORTANT:

The AEMT Codes of Pracice are being replaced with our provisional codes of practice at the end of 2025. Members will be asked to demonstrate compliance with these codes by 2027. The Secretariat and Council are preparing for this transition, ensuring members have the support, resources and tools needed to comply.
