Whitby STW
Hidrostal's pumps installed in a wet well at Whitby STW.
Recently they were called upon by Yorkshire Water to help them with a sporadically performing sewage treatment works in Whitby, a scenic seaside town and renowned tourist destination with a population of 13,000.
Boasting one of the highly acclaimed Blue Flag awards for its town beach, Whitby is fully committed to its sewerage system and after suffering insufficient pumping at the sewage treatment works at Whitby, Yorkshire Water utilised Hidrostal’s expertise to solve the problem.
The original pumps installed at Whitby STW had become obsolete so Hidrostal was asked to provide a competitors pump for hire as a standby unit. The selection was made by the customer as a like for like unit but suffered from blockages and was incapable of handling the incoming flow. Hidrostal attended the treatment works to undertake a thorough site evaluation, including discussing the pumps performance with the operators to fully understand the requirements. Following this process, Hidrostal selected four of their transfer pumps to provide the necessary performance at the site.
The Hidrostal pumps were selected due to their excellent solids handling performance. The Hidrostal screw centrifugal impeller can comfortably handle all types of sludge up to 8% DSC without blocking and is renowned for its rag handling capabilities.
The transfer pumps were installed by Yorkshire Water’s supplier, S & B Utilities in close collaboration with Hidrostal. The installation into a wet well included a new lowering device, pedestal bend, guiderails, chains and lifting devices.
Sam Peacock, Treatment Operator at Whitby STW is delighted with the performance of the new pumps. He states: “They are good, reliable pumps which keep up with the flow demand and have never failed or blocked since installation. We were very impressed with the installation and it has been an all-round good and tidy job.”
Hidrostal were delighted to project manage this contract from problem through to solution. Due to their close collaboration with S & B Utilities, Yorkshire Water’s input requirement was minimal and resulted in a stress free solution to their pumping problem.
Wakefield STW
Hidrostal utilised flexible pipework , fabrication and some very creative thinking to ensure the precise fit of the pump in the Wakefield dry well configuration.
Following the success of the installation at Whitby, Yorkshire Water returned to Hidrostal to find a better solution for a poorly performing sewage treatment works in Wakefield.
Stanley STW was originally part of a £5M investment in Wakefield to benefit 50 properties from the risk of sewer flooding. The sewage treatment works unfortunately fell subject to constant blockages and poor pumping performance.
Hidrostal was called upon to provide the station with a reliable alternative to the ill performing pumps. After a thorough analysis of the station Hidrostal provided Yorkshire Water with a hire pump on a fabricated stand with flexible pipework installed. The pump was selected from Hidrostal’s Fast Track range ensuring full support through any pump failure, meaning very short down times. This has resulted in the site finally operating as intended.
The Hidrostal pumps were selected due to their excellent solids handling performance. This application for Return Activated Sludge is a speciality of Hidrostal’s as the unique characteristics of the Hidrostal single vane screw centrifugal impeller can comfortably handle all types of sludge up to 8% DSC without blocking. The single spiral vane is approximately three times longer than that of a conventional waste water pump so liquid takes three times longer to pass through the impeller from entrance to exit. The gentle passage through the pump ensures that there is no damage to the floc in a RAS pumping application.
The hire pump installed by Hidrostal had to adhere to severe space restrictions. Hidrostal utilised flexible pipework , fabrication and some very creative thinking to ensure the precise fit of the pump in the dry well configuration. Following the installation and trial of the hire pump its suitability was confirmed and a permanent installation made.
Adrian Hibbert, Site Operator at Stanley STW has confirmed that the installation was successful. He has quoted “The Hidrostal pumps are running fine. I’ve never had to unblock them. We now have pumps that are finally doing the job.”
